As a Manager, Business Development - Partnerships at Mayo Clinic, you will support the mission of Mayo Clinic Business Development by leading and/or contributing to partnerships-focused projects, deals, and workstreams. Initial focus includes Medical Devices and Health IT.
Role Overview
You will serve as an individual contributor and, when needed, lead portions of business development work across the Partnerships function. Responsibilities include communicating progress to department leadership, representing the department in relevant meetings with internal stakeholders and external entities, and helping manage workflows and resources to achieve project outcomes. The role includes duties related to project management and opportunity sourcing.
Key Responsibilities
- Directly support the mission of Mayo Clinic Business Development.
- Operate as an individual contributor and lead segments of projects, activities, deals, opportunities, and other departmental work within Partnerships.
- Provide status updates and reporting for assigned work to department leadership.
- Represent the department in interactions and meetings with other Mayo departments and leadership, and/or with external entities, as warranted.
- Support accountability for workflows and resource management to deliver desired project outcomes.
- Perform project management-related duties as part of assigned work.
- Source, evaluate, analyze, and develop new business opportunities, including partnerships, joint ventures, new company spin-offs, investments, and mergers and acquisitions.
- Collaborate across Mayo Clinic and the marketplace to identify opportunities, and connect these efforts to existing operational units in alignment with Mayo Clinic’s strategic plan and prioritized market opportunities.
- Contribute to building a network of industry, entrepreneurial, and investor contacts to support business development and commercialization activities.
Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree required; advanced degree preferred (e.g., PhD, MD, JD) in business, science, or a related relevant field.
- Experience: Two years of specific experience related to the role and area of work (business development, finance/venture capital, technology transfer, venture management, intellectual property commercialization, licensing, patents, partnerships, B2B collaborations, investments, start-up companies, and/or sourcing partnering opportunities in healthcare, medical/biotechnology).
- Alternative pathway: Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of four years of parallel experience.
- For roles within the Commercialization Work Unit: three years experience directly related to technology licensing.
- Degree equivalency may apply in place of formal education requirements (for example, four years experience equivalency for a Bachelor’s degree, two years for a Master’s degree, and two years for an advanced degree).
- Ability to perform in a business development or technology commercialization role and navigate complex inter- and intra-organizational relationships.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work with diverse audiences.
- Strong project management and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial qualities; strong analytical skills; ability to work independently on assigned projects.
Work Portfolio Assignments
Based on departmental needs, positions will also be primarily assigned to one or more work/portfolio teams, with an initial focus on:
- Medical Devices and Health IT

Additional Skills and Preferred Qualifications
- Depending on assignment: business plan creation, due diligence, market research, marketing plan development, concept analysis, business model development, and financial pro-forma development and analysis.
- Assessment of legal/regulatory issues, monitoring operating unit performance, technical sales, evaluation of medical technologies, and evaluation of scientific and commercialization potential.
- Negotiations, contract drafting, and product performance evaluation.
- Special consideration may be given for experience working with an organization or in a role directly related to one or more relevant work teams.
- Additional consideration may be given for an academic medical center or equivalent setting; mergers and acquisitions experience; financial modeling and analytical valuation experience; Chartered Financial Analyst certification (complete or in progress); and experience with a national consulting firm in related functional areas or industries.
Compensation
Salary: $134,300 - $194,700 per year
