Senior Manager - Business Development - Partnerships
Job Description
Lead Mayo Clinic’s partnership and commercialization initiatives as a Senior Manager in Business Development, supporting new opportunities across key technology areas.
Responsibilities
- Directly support the mission of Mayo Clinic Business Development.
- Operate as an individual contributor while leading multiple projects or major portions of multiple large projects, activities, deals, and opportunities.
- Organize opportunities as they arise into appropriate work teams and help assign staff to those teams.
- Own processes and outcomes for assigned projects and provide project status updates and reporting to department leadership.
- Represent the department in meetings and interactions with other Mayo departments, leadership, and external entities as warranted.
- Manage workflows and resources to achieve desired project outcomes.
- Source, evaluate, analyze, and develop new business opportunities, including partnerships, joint ventures, new company spin-offs, investments, mergers and acquisitions.
- Partner across Mayo and the marketplace to identify new business opportunities and connect them with existing operational units aligned with Mayo’s strategic plan, prioritized market opportunities, and competitive activity.
- Help build a network of industry, entrepreneurial, and investor contacts to support business development and commercialization.
- Evaluate the commercial potential of medical inventions and discoveries from Mayo clinical and research activities.
- Develop and implement technology sales and marketing plans.
- Manage patent process and support commercialization by identifying partners, negotiating license agreements, and managing industry relationships.
- Advise Mayo physicians and scientists on intellectual property protection and technology-based business matters.
- Facilitate technology development and commercialization by collaborating with Mayo staff, external companies, entrepreneurs, and investors.
- Identify and support novel technologies from Mayo’s clinical and research activities, with a focus on improving patient care and outcomes.
- Collaborate with physicians, researchers, and cross-functional teams to advance innovative solutions and align technology efforts with organizational priorities.
- Support invention disclosure and intellectual property development, including patentable innovation identification, prior art and landscape analyses, and IP strategy support.
- Run feasibility assessments, market analyses, and competitive evaluations to determine potential impact and commercial viability.
- Create materials to communicate and promote technologies, including summaries, presentations, and supporting documentation for internal and external audiences.
- Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies and contribute to continuous improvement of development processes while ensuring compliance with regulatory, ethical, and confidentiality standards.
- Support planning and execution of technology development and commercialization efforts, including defining scope, timelines, and deliverables, and coordinating internal and external stakeholders.
- Source, evaluate, and execute strategic and financial investments aligned with Mayo’s organizational priorities and defined investment criteria, return thresholds, and governance requirements.
- Assist with portfolio management and advise executive and department leadership on critical financial decisions.
- Originate, evaluate, and execute investment opportunities.
- Assess opportunities against investment criteria and capital structure standards.
- Lead or manage financial modeling, valuation, scenario analysis, comprehensive diligence, and related activities.
- Work with organizational departments, teams, and investment committees to facilitate investments aligned with Mayo’s strategy.
- Perform and manage post-deal activities, including governance and reporting.
- Initially focus on Medical Devices and Health IT and collaborate with the Biopharmaceuticals and Diagnostics Work/Portfolio Teams.
- Typically be placed into two Work/Portfolio Teams.
Requirements
- Master’s degree required; advanced degree preferred (e.g., PhD, MD, JD) in business, science, or a related field.
- Five years specific experience related to the role and area of work in business development, finance/venture capital, technology transfer, venture management, IP commercialization, licensing, patents, partnerships, business-to-business collaborations, investments, start-up companies, and/or sourcing partnering opportunities in healthcare and medical/biotechnology.
- Bachelor’s degree option: minimum six years experience parallel to the above.
- Degree substitution: years of applicable experience may be recognized in lieu of the degree requirement (examples provided: four years for Bachelor’s equivalency, two years for Master’s equivalency, two years for an advanced degree equivalency).
- Ability to operate in business development and technology commercialization, navigating complex inter- and intra-organizational relationships.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work with people across diverse backgrounds.
- Strong project management and time management skills; ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial qualities.
- Strong analytical skills, resourcefulness, and ability to work independently on assigned projects.
- Five years experience directly related to technology licensing for roles within the Commercialization Work Unit.

- $155,500 - $225,400 / year
