Business Development Manager
Job Description
The Business Development Manager leads the development of business opportunities for a division, driving growth through new business identification and coordination across internal stakeholders. The position holds overall accountability for business development and revenue and earnings performance, with a focus on expanding technologies, markets, and customer programs.
Core Responsibilities
- Direct and generate business opportunities for a division or across multiple divisions.
- Build teaming and partnering alliances with customers, working with business teams, other divisions, Groups, and existing and potential customers to promote company technologies, products, and services.
- Identify potential new business and technologies to support and exceed Divisional Growth objectives established through the Strategic Deployment Process.
- Partner with Group and Division Marketing to develop strategic and tactical plans supported by market research and innovation for short- and long-term objectives.
- Conduct competitive research, evaluate sales performance, and define goals and milestones for specific products and systems.
- Apply a strong understanding of divisional technical capabilities, operational capacity, and market information to influence future plans and strategies.
- Serve as a liaison and facilitator with customers and Group/Division/Country Marketing to resolve issues and support customer satisfaction related to cost, product quality, delivery, and performance.
- Provide liaison support to customers across divisions for existing and new programs.
- Maintain close communication with division technology and operations teams to enable rapid turnaround solutions.
- Develop and maintain customer relationships to understand future market and customer needs and to expand business opportunities.
- Identify business development opportunities by studying competitors, benchmarking, analyzing problems, applying market intelligence, and identifying trends.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge through educational workshops, trade and technical publication reviews, professional networks, professional associations, and industry trade shows and conferences.
- Establish goals and objectives by coordinating cross-division efforts to carry out programs and functions.
- Recommend actions by analyzing and interpreting data, including complex comparative analyses.
- Act as a technical subject expert and resource, sharing specialized knowledge with others.
- Represent the company on specific projects and contribute to team results as needed.
- Perform work that may include cross-functional or project team responsibilities, including continuous improvement efforts.
Business Development Focus
- Develop new and additional business, including global growth.
- Support customer and application development.
- Identify and help launch new and existing innovative products.
- Identify new business, technologies, and markets for the division.
- Build business models to grow business globally for the division.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (BA) in Marketing, Engineering, or a related field.
- MBA desired.
- Demonstrated ability to perform essential functions typically acquired through ten or more years of increasingly responsible experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of marketing and business development principles, industry practices, company products, technology, regulations, service capabilities, and policies.
- Knowledge of program management and business processes, including technical and business proposal development.
- Knowledge of domestic and international customer budgeting and acquisition processes and procedures.
- Knowledge of government and industrial procurement regulations and practices, including related US and international rules and regulations.
- Ability to work on most complex problems involving analysis of situations or data requiring evaluation of intangible variables and/or incomplete data, with a broad long-term perspective.
- Ability to use standard business applications software.
- Ability to effectively and persuasively present information to top management and customers.
- Ability to translate customer desires and projected requirements into business development strategies and develop solutions to customer problems.
