Job Description
The Senior Associate, Business Development - Investments at Mayo Clinic supports the organization’s business development efforts through individual-contributor execution of sourcing, analysis, diligence, and investment activities aligned with Mayo priorities. This hybrid role is based in Rochester, MN.
What You’ll Do
- Support the mission of Mayo Clinic Business Development by completing assigned workflows and processes.
- Develop assessments, reports, analyses, business plans, market research, and other project materials for multiple concurrent initiatives.
- Contribute to overall project management while organizing and managing work across active projects.
- Source, evaluate, analyze, and develop new business opportunities for Mayo Clinic, including partnerships, joint ventures, new company spin-offs, investments, and mergers and acquisitions.
- Collaborate across Mayo Clinic and with marketplace stakeholders to identify opportunities and connect them to existing operational units in line with the strategic plan, prioritized market opportunities, and competitive activity.
- Contribute to building a network of industry, entrepreneurial, and investor contacts to support business development and commercialization activities.
- Source, evaluate, and help execute strategic and financial investments, ensuring each opportunity meets defined investment criteria, return thresholds, and governance requirements.
- Assist with portfolio management and advise executive and department leadership on critical financial decisions.
- Originate, assess, and execute investment opportunities, including scenario analysis, valuation, and comprehensive diligence.
- Work with departments, investment committees, and teams to facilitate investments aligned with Mayo’s strategy.
- Manage post-deal activities, including governance and reporting.
- Evaluate commercial potential of medical inventions and discoveries from Mayo’s clinical and research activities.
- Develop and implement technology sales and marketing plans, manage patent processes, identify potential commercial partners, and negotiate license agreements and other commercialization arrangements.
- Collaborate to facilitate development and commercialization of Mayo technologies by working with internal teams and external companies, entrepreneurs, and investors, with an emphasis on improving patient care and outcomes.
Education
- Master’s degree required
- Advanced degree preferred: PhD, MD, or JD
Required Experience
- Minimum 1 year of specific experience related to the role and area of work
- Relevant areas include: business development, finance/venture capital, technology transfer, venture management, IP commercialization, licensing, patents, partnerships, business-to-business collaborations, investments, and start-up companies or sourcing partnering opportunities in healthcare and medical/biotechnology
Additional Eligibility Details
- Alternative option: Bachelor’s degree plus minimum 3 years experience parallel to the above
- Two years of experience directly related to technology licensing for roles within the Commercialization Work Unit
- Degree requirement can be met in lieu of a degree through experience equivalency (four years for Bachelor’s; two years for Master’s; two years for an advanced degree)

Preferred / Considered Experience
- Depending on assignment, additional preferred skills may include: business plan creation, due diligence, market research, marketing plan development, concept analysis, business model development, financial pro-forma development and analysis, legal/regulatory issues assessment, monitoring product or operating unit performance, technical sales, negotiations, contract drafting, and evaluation of scientific and commercialization potential
- Experience evaluating medical technologies
- Experience working with relevant work teams may receive special consideration
- Additional consideration may be given for: experience with an academic medical center, mergers and acquisitions, financial modeling and analytical valuation, Chartered Financial Analyst certification (in progress or complete), and experience with a national consulting firm in related industries

Compensation and Exemption
- Compensation: $107,400 - $150,400 per year
- Exemption status: Exempt
