Senior Director - Business Development - Partnerships
Job Description
The Senior Director of Business Development Partnerships will help execute business development initiatives across Mayo Clinic by managing multiple projects, sourcing new opportunities, and representing the department internally and externally as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the mission of Mayo Clinic Business Development.
- Execute and manage outcomes of multiple projects or major initiatives, including deals, opportunities, and other departmental work from inception through execution.
- Organize emerging opportunities into appropriate work teams and assign staff accordingly.
- Provide project status updates and reporting to department leadership.
- Represent the department with other Mayo Clinic leadership and external entities, as warranted.
- Perform managerial and human resources responsibilities for directly reporting staff, including performance reviews, goal-setting, mentoring/coaching, and career development, based on departmental needs.
- Share accountability for overall departmental success by partnering with leadership to prioritize and balance initiatives.
- Model departmental and Mayo Clinic values, policies, and goals.
- Source, evaluate, analyze, and develop new business opportunities for Mayo Clinic, including partnerships, joint ventures, new company spin-offs, investments, and mergers and acquisitions.
- Collaborate with internal areas and marketplace stakeholders to identify new business opportunities, aligning efforts with Mayo Clinic’s strategic plan, prioritized markets, and competitive activity.
- Help build a network of industry, entrepreneurial, and investor contacts to support business development and commercialization activities.

- Partnerships: Source, evaluate, analyze, and develop new business opportunities for Mayo Clinic, including partnerships, joint ventures, new company spin-offs, investments, mergers and acquisitions.
- Commercialization: Evaluate commercial potential of medical inventions and discoveries, develop and implement technology sales and marketing plans, manage the patent process, identify potential commercial partners, negotiate license agreements and other commercialization arrangements, manage relationships with industry, and advise Mayo physicians and scientists regarding intellectual property protection.
- Technology Development: Facilitate the development and commercialization of Mayo Clinic technologies by collaborating with Mayo staff, external companies, entrepreneurs, and investors.

Requirements
- Master’s degree required, or an advanced degree preferred (e.g., PhD, MD, JD) in business, science, or a related field, plus eight years of specific experience related to business development and the area of work (including finance/venture capital, technology transfer, venture management, IP commercialization, licensing, patents, partnerships, business-to-business collaborations, investments, and start-up sourcing opportunities in health care/medical/biotechnology).
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten years experience parallel to the above.
- Seven years experience directly related to technology licensing for roles within the Commercialization Work Unit.
- Degree equivalency may be considered in lieu of a degree, recognizing applicable experience in amounts that match the normally required years to earn the degree.
- Proven ability to operate in business development and/or technology commercialization roles, managing complex inter- and intra-organizational issues and relationships.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong project and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Entrepreneurial/intrapreneurial qualities.
- Strong analytical skills, resourcefulness, and the ability to work independently on assigned projects.
- Depending on assignment, additional preferred skills may include: business plan creation, due diligence, market research, marketing plan development, concept analysis, business model development, financial pro-forma development and analysis, legal/regulatory assessment, monitoring product or operating unit performance, technical sales, evaluation of medical technologies, negotiations, contract drafting, and evaluation of scientific and commercialization potential.
- Experience working within relevant work teams may receive special consideration.
Education
Master’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred (examples include PhD, MD, JD).
Location and Work Model
- Location: Rochester, MN (hybrid)
- Hybrid requirement: Must be located within 100 miles of a Mayo Clinic site or based in the San Francisco Bay Area or Boston, MA area.
- Role focus: Biopharmaceuticals.
Compensation and Schedule
- Salary range: USD 225,160 to 337,700 per year
- Exemption status: Exempt
- Schedule: Full Time
- Hours: 80
- Days: Monday to Friday, business hours
- Weekend schedule: Not applicable
