Business Development Manager
Job Description
Redmond, WA (onsite) provides the foundation for building strong relationships and moving deals forward with Microsoft teams and partners. In this Business Development role, you will help shape governance and execution plans, advance pipeline and deal opportunities across defined stages, and connect partner and product insights to engineering and program improvements.
What you’ll work on
You will lead internal and external relationship development for assigned accounts, using research and stakeholder engagement to understand customer and partner strategies and relevant industry trends. You will articulate Microsoft’s point-of-view, including product road map implications, and translate opportunities into clear business value propositions that align with deal diligence and execution planning.
Responsibilities
- Build post-deal governance and execution plans, including Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to demonstrate achieved business value.
- Ensure design, communication, and alignment in governance, including troubleshooting simple issues as they arise.
- Support execution and deal management by communicating and reporting with Microsoft stakeholders and applying security-first thinking within relevant deal management activities.
- Track blocking issues across stakeholders and drive resolutions to keep opportunities moving.
- Collaborate with teams to create practices that enable partners to influence the product, and collect partner feedback to identify product gaps and areas of opportunity.
- Improve existing program operations by applying industry methodology and innovation, defining program issues, assessing scenarios, and selecting the optimal approach.
- Identify internal opportunities to develop new programs and improve current ones, including learning process improvement methods with oversight and guidance.
- Contribute to root-cause analysis and cross-team alignment by defining program strategy, gathering requirements, identifying resource needs, and building the project plan and targets.
- Lead pipeline development using established processes and prepare reporting for key stakeholders.
- Support negotiation by identifying negotiation scenarios and escalating as appropriate.
- Advance opportunities across deal stages (including Strategic Approval (SA), Approval to Negotiate (A2N), and Final Go-no-go (FGNG)) to closure, using predefined program frameworks or templates when appropriate.
- Develop a network of business and technical decision makers for assigned accounts and engage customers and partners to highlight the value of Microsoft opportunities, escalating to senior colleagues when needed.
Research, strategy alignment, and stakeholder engagement
- Research technology, industry, and market trends to understand how Microsoft is positioned, then share insights and identify actions based on findings.
- Develop target customer and partner lists to close high-priority gaps across technology, product, business, and/or geography.
- Use quantitative data (such as usage and revenue) to inform internal and external decisions and provide input into partner recommendations.
- Engage executive-level stakeholders (e.g., Sr. Directors) and collaborate with internal teams and business units to build knowledge of internal resources.
Key qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Liberal Arts, Sciences, or related field AND 3+ years relevant work experience (e.g., investment banking, consulting, finance, marketing, corporate strategy, sales, venture capital, legal, business development, product management, project management, software development, or related field) OR equivalent experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree AND 5+ years relevant work experience (examples listed above) OR Master’s/Advanced Degree in Business, Sciences, or related field AND 2+ years relevant work experience (examples listed above).
- 4+ years experience in the technology industry OR in a technical role (e.g., IT, Engineering).
Compensation and application details
- Business Development IC3: typical U.S. base pay range USD $86,100 - $169,800 per year.
- Different base pay ranges apply for specific locations in the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area: USD $113,300 - $187,400 per year.
