Job Description

Markel Corporation is seeking a senior leader to shape and manage trading relationships between Markel Specialty and premier broker partners, translating market insights into strategic growth initiatives. This hybrid role in New York oversees national business development for the US Retail operation, collaborating closely with underwriting and distribution teams to hit annual objectives and elevate partner engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Create and execute measurable broker-focused strategies that drive growth and profitability while increasing Markel Specialty’s appeal within the US Retail broker network.
  • Design engagement plans that cultivate executive-level relationships between Markel leaders and broker counterparts.
  • Identify and evaluate growth opportunities using a broad mix of internal data, market intelligence, and relationship capital.
  • Collaborate with regional underwriting and distribution teams to implement broker strategies, nurture relationships, and capture feedback to improve broker trading relationships.
  • Act as broker advocate for assigned trading partners, managing accounts and escalating issues as needed.
  • Hold broker partners accountable for productive engagement and trading results.
  • Lead initiatives through influence and subject-matter expertise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years of business development and/or underwriting experience in commercial property, casualty and specialty insurance.
  • Proven executive relationships with the industry’s top 25 P&C and Specialty retail brokers.
  • Expert relationship development skills and a strong personal brand.
  • Demonstrated leadership and negotiation capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to deliver compelling presentations.
  • High energy, strategic thinker, proactive self-starter.
  • Ability to manage a mid-to-high volume of national travel.

Pay Information

The base salary range for this role is $188,000 to $259,000 per year, with a 55% bonus potential. The exact base salary is determined by compensable factors including job-relevant education, experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors.
